How Do You Measure Love?

Every person measures love based on their own life experiences. Some measure love based off what feeds their own needs or personal voids. This can be family, friend, or significant other. Furthermore, love is not demanding, greedy or abusive. Love according to the word is patient, kind, and unselfish. How do those around you measure love? How does it effect you?

Love based on Monetary Gifts

For some love is giving them money or buying them gifts. You will always owe “them” something. Love for them is based on the tangible. What belongs to to you belongs to them. They’re love is always based on expectation rather than trust or commitment.

Love based on Catering to Their Needs

Love is catering to their specific needs as a result, you become a “Yes” person for their benefit. As long as you agree with them they feel your love. This love is driven by selfish tendencies. What are you doing to please them?

Love Based on Excepting Their Abuse

For some love is allowing physical, mental, and verbal abuse. If you love them you will except their apology and be okay. If you don’t tolerate their dysfunction, you don’t love them. You know they don’t mean it because they love you.

Love Given Unconditionally

Finally, unconditional love gives some the ability to love without expectations. This love is without demands. Therefore, love with a sense of respect. Love without limitation. A love that sets healthy boundaries. I read a really good book that speaks on the different love languages. It was very insightful. There’s another book for those who are interested in the spiritual side of love as well.

From a Spiritual Standpoint:

Love is not demanding, greedy or abusive, therefore love according to the word being patient, kind, and unselfish. Don’t allow someones dysfunctional views of love stress or destroy your life and happiness. Hence the word according to 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 “Love is patent, love is kind, It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”

Let’s Pray: Heavenly Father give us the wisdom and knowledge to love others the right way. Heal and mend those who function in unhealthy love so they’re not hurting those around them. Give everyone the ability to love unconditionally.
