From Shepard to King

The bible speaks of a King named David. David was bold, fearless, a worshiper, with a history of rebellion. David went from shoveling sheep dong to ruling in the palace. Who would have thought that David would have ended up in such a powerful position?

I want to imagine things from the eyes of David who cared for his father’s sheep, playing the harp and worshipping the Lord without a care in the world. He had brothers and from the sound of things were attending to different matters other than animals. David seems to be ok with tending to animals and smelling sheep’s dong all day. It doesn’t sound like he was preparing to be King or a full-time musician. I tell you, life definitely has a way of just happening or shall I say God has a strange way at times of thrusting you into greatest without your permission.

Now on the other side of town, Samuel was receiving instruction from God to find and anoint David as King. Can you imagine, David smelling like sheep will be chosen to be king? Well, let me tell you, God loves everyone no matter what their background is and he has a plan for all. We just have to make sure we’re in a place to be found even if it’s tending to smelly sheep. So, anyway, since the current King Saul had issues following God’s instructions because he had decided to do things his own way, he was being replaced.

Back at Jesse’s house everyone we assume was about their normal day. David’s brothers well groomed, smelling good and spending time inside with their father. David was outside worshipping the Lord and playing the harp for the sheep. I wonder how the sheep felt about harp music. Anyway here comes Samuel with a horn of oil looking for David, but at the time he didn’t know it was David. Samuel is welcomed in by Jesse and he explains he’s there for the next King. What? Jesse has a King living in his home; it must be one of those well-kept boys.  Jesse lines them up because one of them is the next King how exciting. Samuel attempts to pour the oil on each boy only to find out the oil wouldn’t come out the horn for any of them. Did I tell you how many sons Jesse had? Eight sons and David was the youngest. So seven times Samuel poured and nothing happened. Samuel said do you have any other sons because surely the Lord would not send me to hear if it were not so. Oh, yeah Jesse remembered David outside caring for sheep. David comes in, Samuel pours the oil and it flows. Guess who’s the next King?

Isn’t this a big lesson for us all? It doesn’t matter your background, what you look like, or the type of family you come from. God can use you, he has plans for you. Now you’re probably wondering how caring for smelly sheep, playing the harp and worshipping God in the hot sun is useable. Well, David commitment to care for those sheep showed he could be as equally committed to caring for a Kingdom. It’s the small things that show character. Playing the harp was later used to calm the issues of Saul. Worshipping God in the hot sun showed God that David was willing to honor him regardless of position.

David went on to kill a giant name Goliath, take Saul’s place that later turned on him, became Jonathans good friend who happens to be Saul’s son and a King who struggled with his flesh but had a heart for God. “Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.”

Let’s pray: for all the David’s who may not have been seen as significant but you carry greatness inside. I pray that the Lord will lead you to a purposeful life. That the King or Queen in you will be awakening so you can share the goodness of God. I pray for a Samuel that will show up and point you in the right direction. I pray you receive instruction from heaven and you have the boldness to follow thru. May you always find time to worship your Lord and Savior. May the Lord always remember you, so you live life on purpose and do great exploits for his Kingdom. God bless you for now, Amen.
